Question: Which South has to play.(Nice problem to anyone who didn’t read this article)

The bidding shows that East has no minimum. A lot of pairs play3NT as 18-19 points.

Truus en Louis not, they promise 14 points.

If East has 14 points and West 14 (you can see the dummy) then NS have12.

In fact A,A, en A. Seems logic doesn’t it? So South has to play A.

When South played low dummy was reached with 8 to the 9.

On 4 times the 3- and 4 were discarded in East.

After that with to East en 3NT +2 was a full toppy-joppy.

(a dutch expression for a good-hoeree)

Trick3: K - 5 - 3 - A

Trick4: 5 - 4 - 4 - 8

Trick5: Q - 9 - 6 - 2

Trick6: A

Trick7: to the Q

Trick8: to the K ruffed by South. Declarer dit not draw the last trump. When the are not 3-3 on NS the 4th can be ruffed in dummy.

Question: which card should South play?

EW have the convention first dbl and then bidding a suit shows 16+ points.

North did start the bidding with 1, so he wont’t have a 5-card .

North has at least 12 points. So North has a 2-4-3-4 distribution.

East showed KQ en AK, so also has A.

Winning is to play 10. North has to count as well and not play K if West plays small.

When in the reality 2 (encouraging) was played West played 7 and North had to play K to the A from East. He continued to the J and the precious extra trick was born.

Bridge will allways be a game of counting.

Critics may notice that the play of Q also was a right card to continue. True. If East takes A and ruffs a and plays 8 from dummy North has to play a small .

Greetings from Louis, the dutch player
